Middle Level Education Promotion Policy
The Board of Education recognizes that young adolescence is a critical period in the development and education of students. Middle level students must develop 21st century learning skills and be able to use technological tools. Therefore, all students in grades six, seven, and eight shall be required to take language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies and be able to demonstrate their 21st century knowledge and skills.
Students will receive an academic unit for each of the core content courses to be promoted to the next grade level. Successful completion shall be based on academic proficiency on identified benchmarks.

Note: This policy shall take effect school year 2010-2011.
Middle School Promotion
Beginning in SY 2007-2008, all students must complete 15 units total to be promoted to the ninth grade.
Grade 6 Credits:
4 units in core areas:
- Language Arts
- Math
- Social Studies
- Science
Grade 7 Credits:
4 units in core areas:
- Language Arts
- Math
- Social Studies
- Science
Grade 8 Credits:
4 units in core areas:
- Language Arts
- Math
- Social Studies
- Science
Assessing/Reporting Student Progress
Other Credits
- State Agencies—credits will be accepted if awarded
- Home school—no credit awarded
- Correspondence—may award credit (Principal’s discretion)
Course Waiver for Modern History of Hawaii
- Out-of-State history credit can be accepted in place of Modern History of Hawaii
